A Resolution in Support of Continued Co-Sponsorship of National Tribal Education Department Forums.

WHEREAS, at least 80 tribes have tribal education departments which administer programs and functions designed to improve the quality of education and educational opportunities in Indian Country for over 600,000 American Indian and Alaska Native students, and

WHEREAS, for the past several years, the National Indian Education Association (NIEA), along with tribes, tribal organizations, and other Indian education organizations, has co-sponsored a National Forum on Tribal Education Departments to facilitate their information-sharing and the identification of common issues, and

WHEREAS, the National Forums on Tribal Education Departments are typically held in conjunction with NIEA’s Annual Convention, or in conjunction with another major gathering of Indian educators and/or tribal leaders.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE NATIONAL INDIAN EDUCATION ASSOCIATION pledges to continue to cosponor National Forums on Tribal Education Departments in conjunction with its annual conventions and/ or other major gatherings of Indian educators and/or tribal leaders as a useful means of improving the quality of education and educational opportunities for Indian students.
