Resolution In Support Of A Model Evaluation Of Tribal Education Departments.
WHEREAS, at least 80 tribes have tribal education departments which administer programs and functions designed to improve the quality of education in Indian Country through the exercise of tribal sovereignty over education; and
WHEREAS, the Carnegie Corporation of New York has recently offered to fund an evaluation of a tribal education department to see how tribal education departments are working and how they can be improved; and
WHEREAS, this model evaluation has profound implications for the future of tribal education departments nationally, as the evaluation will be used by tribal, state, and federal policy makers to measure the effectiveness of tribal education departments.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE NATIONAL INDIAN EDUCATION ASSOCIATION supports an evaluation of a tribal education department as a useful model for promoting the rights and roles of all tribal education departments and the sovereignty of tribes over the education of their members.
