NIEA Statement: White House announces Inter-Agency Agreement between ED and Interior to transfer Native education programs

Today the White House and Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon, announced that the Department of Education (ED) signed six Inter-Agency Agreements to transfer the administration of programs across Elementary and Secondary Education as well as Postsecondary Education.

Native American Programs are included in the transfer to the Department of the Interior.

These agreements, signed with the Department of the Interior (DOI), Department of Labor (DOL), Health and Human Services (HHS), and the State Department (State), follow the previous transfer of program administration of Career and Technical Education to DOL earlier this year.

The transfer of Native American Programs to DOI include: Title VI, Native Languages, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Education, as well as Tribal College-related programs. See the Department of Education and Department of the Interior Partnership Fact Sheet here.

The White House has confirmed that funding levels for programs will be protected and maintained. NIEA is monitoring these transfers closely and will provide additional updates as they become available.
