NIEA Board of Directors Elections
The NIEA Board of Directors is open to any American Indian/Alaska
Native/Native Hawaiian over 18 years of age at the time of nomination.
Any eligible General, Student, or Lifetime voting NIEA member in good
standing may nominate, be nomi- nated, and/or be elected to the NIEA
Board of Directors. Current NIEA Board members may not nominate an
individual, and board candidates may not nominate themselves. For the
2011 NIEA convention election, there will be (4) General Board Member
vacancies only.
NIEA Board of Directors elections take place at the NIEA Annual Convention and NIEA members may nominate candidates as soon as the NIEA Call to Convention is released each spring. General Board members serve a three year term and student board members serve a two year term. Below are the candidate qualifications and voting procedures. Deadline for 2011 NIEA Board of Directors Nominations: July 28, 2011
NIEA Board Candidate Nomination Qualifications:
- American Indians , Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians (General Board Members) over 18 years old at the time of nomination are eligible to serve on the NIEA Board
- NIEA General, Student or Lifetime voting members in good standing may make nominations, be nominated and/or be elected to the Board.
- Current NIEA Board members may not nominate individuals and persons may not nominate themselves.
- General Board members serve a three year term; Student Board members serve a two year term.
- Board members must remain members in good standing for the duration of their term of office
Nominees must agree to the following conditions:
- Attendance at a workshop on election procedures, NIEA Board duties, responsibilities and expectations on a date TBD
- Eligible candidates will introduce themselves and platforms to the membership at the Convention's first General Assembly.
- Newly-elected Board members will take their oath of office during the Convention's fourth General Assembly
- Newly-elected Board members must make arrangements to stay for the full Board meeting after the Convention adjourns (typically all day on the following Monday).
NIEA Board Elections Voting Procedures
Voting On-Site
On-site elections will be conducted the Friday of the Annual Convention between 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. at the designated voting area. For more specific information for this year's Convention, please visit the NIEA Convention - Board Election page.
Voting by Absentee Ballot
- Individuals who have paid their membership for the current year may request absentee ballots if they are unable to attend the NIEA Annual Convention
- Absentee ballots must be requested in writing. Requests can be faxed to the NIEA office (202.544.7293). The deadline for requests is posted in the NIEA Annual Call to Convention. Telephone requests are not accepted.
- All absentee ballots must be turned in 21 calendar days prior to the first day of the NIEA Annual Convention.
Voting Outcome or Determinants
- The process of tabulating the official vote for new officers will follow Article IV of the NIEA Constitution in that all votes be tabulated on site by the NIEA Elections Committee and/or their designates.
- The replacement officers will be determined by an allotment of most votes received per individual as voted on by the membership.
Election Challenge Procedure
If there is a challenge to the election results, it must be filed with the current NIEA President or the Executive Director by 12:00 pm (noon) the morning the results are announced. The NIEA Board of Directors will convene to address the challenge.
