WHEREAS: The American Indian Graduate Center (AIGC) of Albuquerque, New Mexico, had assisted over 3,500 American and Alaska Native college students in all areas of graduate and professional study since 1969, and
WHEREAS: Indian professionals will continue to be needed by tribes and Indian communities to help improve the lives of Indian people, develop economic self-suffiency, and promote tribal sovereignty, and
WHEREAS: AIGC has successfully administered the BIA’s “Special Higher Education (Graduate) Program” for Indian college students since 1972.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: The National Indian Education Association hereby urges Congress to support graduate fellowship assistance for American Indians through AIGC by appropriating $3.5 million for the BIA’s “Special Higher Education Program” by FY ’93, and
THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: NIEA also urges foundations and corporations to promote graduate and professional education for American Indians by supporting the American Indian Graduate Center.
