Support American Indian Scholarships, Inc.

WHEREAS, The future success of American Indian tribes and Alaska Native governments depends on Indian people being trained and educated in all professional fields.
WHEREAS, Indian professionals are needed in fields of study including education, business administration, law, engineering, medicine, and health and numerous other areas.
WHEREAS, American Indian Scholarships, Inc. (AIS) of Albuquerque, N.M., the nation’s only national, non-profit, Indian graduate program has awarded nearly 4,000 fellowships to more than 2,500 Indian students since 1969.
WHEREAS, For the 1988-89 academic year, AIS is assisting 292 fellows at more that 100 colleges and universities.
WHEREAS, AIS needs the support of tribes, Indian organizations, alumni, and the public and private sector to maintain its program and increase its funding for Indian graduate education.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the National Indian Education Association reaffirms its support of American Indian Scholarships, Inc. and encourages a funding level of $2.5 million in the 1990 fiscal year budget for the Bureau of Indian Affaj_rs (BIA).
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT NIEA commends the AIS organization on its 20th Anniversary celebration in 1989 and urges foundations, corporations individuals and other private funding sources to recognize the critical need for Indian graduate education through support of the AIS program.
I hereby certify that the foregoing resolution was duly considered by the National Indian Education Association assembled at its 20th Annual Conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma at which a quorum was present and that same x passed; opposed; this resolution, this 17th day of November, 1988.
